A patient navigator helps guide a patient through the health care system. This includes help going through the screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of a medical condition, such as cancer. A patient navigator helps patients communicate with their health care providers and may also help patients set up appointments for doctor visits and medical tests, as well as get financial, legal and social support. They may also work with insurance companies, employers, case managers, lawyers and others who may have an effect on a patient’s health care needs. Careers include patient navigator, patient advocate, access navigator, community outreach linkage navigator, health navigator and/or patient care coordinator.

Careers in public health include health educator, health sciences officer, health program manager/analyst, health communications specialist, health services manager, environmental scientists, epidemiologist/biostatistician, research assistant and/or disease investigator. This is not an exhaustive list, but these roles are most often found in local, state or federal government organizations, community-based organizations or non-profit organizations. Many graduates of the program also go on to graduate programs in public health, health care administration or health care management.
